About the Frog

The Yellow-Banded “Bumblebee” Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates leucomelas) is native to the tropical rainforests of South America. It is distinguished by its vibrant yellow body with contrasting black bands, which serve as a warning to potential predators of its toxic nature. Typically, these small, agile frogs measure 2-5cm, with females generally being slightly larger than males. They have adhesive pads on their toes and a short sticky tongue that extends to catch insects.

These frogs inhabit the lush undergrowth of tropical rainforests, where they can be found amidst leaf litter, fallen logs, and dense vegetation. They are most active during the day, and thrive in warm, humid environments with ample moisture. They are solitary creatures, with individuals typically occupying their own territories within the forest. Despite their small size, these frogs are known for their bold behavior, confidently traversing the forest floor in search of prey.

They are the only species of poison dart frog known to estivate during dry spells. They enter a state characterised by inactivity and a lowered metabolic rate similar to hibernation, but in response to high temperatures and arid conditions during summer.
