About the Fish
The turquoise rainbowfish (Melanotaenia lacustris) is among the larger rainbowfish species, growing up to 12.5 cm (5 inches) in length. Males display vivid and deep hues of blue, aqua, and turquoise, while females tend to have a lighter cyan coloration. Their colours can change throughout the day, with a beautiful display best seen in the morning or after water changes.
They originate exclusively from Lake Kutubu, a limestone-rich lake in southern Papua New Guinea. The water in their natural habitat is alkaline with a high pH of around 8.5 to 9, influenced by underground springs fed through limestone veins. This environment is important to replicate in captivity for their well-being.
Turquoise rainbowfish are peaceful and sociable, preferring to live in groups of six or more, ideally with multiple females per male to reduce aggression. They are active swimmers and form loose shoals rather than tight schooling formations, which means they stay together but do not always swim in perfect synchrony.
Breeding turquoise rainbowfish can be rewarding but requires attention to water quality and tank conditions. Males exhibit more intense colours during breeding to attract females. They scatter eggs among plants, and the fry hatch after several days. Providing plenty of fine-leaved plants helps protect eggs and fry. The species is known for prolific breeding, which can lead to rapid population growth in a well-maintained aquarium.
