Swinhoe’s Pheasant (Lophura swinhoii) is a spectacular Taiwanese bird that lives in the island’s mountain forests. They prefer cool shady forest floors with dense cover and are generally shy. They are active mainly at dawn and dusk, foraging along forest paths and clearings to catch a varied diet of seeds, fruits, leaves, buds, shoots, and small animals and insects.

Males have glossy blue-black plumage, a white crest, white tail feathers, and bright red face and wattles. During the breeding season, in late spring and early summer, Swinhoe’s pheasants become more conspicuous. Males may court several females, and nesting is usually done on the ground in a shallow scrape lined with plant material.

The species is important to Taiwanese natural history, and it is sometimes treated as an unofficial national symbol because its plumage reflects the red, white, and blue of Taiwan’s flag. It has become an icon of national conservation efforts because of its association with intact mountain forest. Swinhoe’s pheasant thrive in reserves and national parks but face habitat loss and environmental pressure in some other areas.
