About the Frog
Oophaga pumilio is commonly known as the Strawberry Poison Dart Frog. The Puerto Viejo morph specifically hails from the lush rainforests of Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Despite being only 1.5 to 2.5cm, its vivid golden orange colouration serves as a visual warning to potential predators about its toxicity.
The skin of these frogs contains potent alkaloid batrachotoxins, sequestered from their diet of ants. These interfere with voltage-gated sodium channels essential for the propagation of action potentials in nerve cells. Prolonged depolarisation leads to an inability to transmit signals effectively, causes paralysis in predators that attempt to consume the frog. Captive-bred individuals reared on a different diet may not develop the same level of toxicity.
Oophaga pumilio have complex courtships with the male engaging in vocalizations and intricate movements to attract a partner. The female lays eggs in vegetation near water sources. The male then diligently guards the eggs, periodically moistening them to prevent desiccation. After hatching, the female transports the tadpoles individually to small water-filled cavities, such as bromeliad axils or other phytotelmata. Here, the tadpoles develop into froglets, nourished by unfertilised eggs provided by the female.
