About the Frog
The Pig-Nosed Purple Frog, Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis, is found in the Western Ghats mountain range in India. It has a round, purplish-grey body that allows it to burrow its way through the soil with minimal resistance, as well as spade-like feet and strong legs to provide the power to push through dense earth, enabling it to spend the majority of its life underground.
It has a small head with an elongated snout that gives it the distinctive “pig-nosed” look and permits rooting around in the soil, seeking termite tunnels and nests, catching them with its specialised long narrow tongue. It thrives in regions with heavy rainfall and a rich, loamy soil that makes burrowing easier and spends most of it’s life underground, emerging from its subterranean home for a brief period during the monsoon season to breed.
During this period, males emit a loud and distinctive mating call, reminiscent of a chicken clucking, from under a thin layer of soil. Once a female responds, the pair mates, and she lays about 3000 eggs. The tadpoles have large, flat bodies with sucker-like mouths that help them cling to rocks in fast-flowing streams. This adaptation allows them to survive in the turbulent waters of the Western Ghats during the rains.
