The pheasant, Phasianus colchicus, is a large, long-tailed game bird widely found across most of the UK, having originally been introduced from Asia. Male pheasants are strikingly colourful and larger than females with a long tail that can be almost 50 cm. Their plumage features rich chestnut, golden-brown, and black markings on the body and tail, complemented by a blue green head and bright red facial wattles.
Pheasants forage mostly on the ground but roost in sheltered trees at night for safety. During the breeding season, males become highly territorial and polygynous, performing courtship displays that include wing-dragging dances to attract females. Females nest on the ground in scrapes lined with grass and leaves, often hidden under dense cover or hedges. Chicks leave the nest shortly after hatching and begin flying at around two weeks old.
