The Nuthatch (Sitta europaea) is a plump, compact bird with blue-grey upperparts including wings, crown, and nape, and peach-buff underparts that deepen to chestnut on the flanks and under the tail. Its head is white with a striking black eye stripe that gives it a bandit-like mask. Nuthatches are unique for climbing down tree trunks headfirst while foraging for insects and seeds. They are highly territorial year-round, often defending their area aggressively against intruders. They cache food in tree crevices for future consumption and wedge nuts into bark cracks to hammer them open with their strong bills.
