The mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) is a large, full-bodied duck measuring around 60 cm in length with a wingspan of perhaps 90 cm. The male, or drake, is striking with a glossy iridescent green head, a white neck ring, chestnut-brown breast, grey body, and a yellow bill. It also has distinctive curly black tail feathers. The female is mottled brown with an orange bill often marked with black, providing excellent camouflage. Both sexes feature a bluish speculum on their wings bordered by white. Mallards are common in wetlands and urban areas and are known for their dabbling feeding style.
