Brian and Ros graze a small flock of pedigree Hebrideans on their smallholding near Kames on Argyll's Secret Coast where the sheep enjoy fine views across Kilbride bay to Arran. The flock name derives from the Victorian era gunpowder magazine that was part of the Kames powder works. The sheep were hand sheared in the field for this batch of wool and carefully selected fleeces were carded and spun on restored vintage machinery at the Halifax Spinning Mill in Yorkshire.
Gunpowder Flock is an undyed yarn with a lovely natural cool brown colour and pretty light flecks. Each DK ball has around 100 metres of length. It is suitable for approximately 4-5mm needles. Hand wash only; this yarn is *not* superwash treated. It is much softer than you might expect from pedigree Hebridean wool but it is more rustic than our usual merino bases.
