The Green Woodpecker, Britain’s largest woodpecker, is easily recognisable by its vibrant green upper parts, yellow rump, and red crown. Males have a distinctive red centre in their black ‘moustache,’ while females have a solid black stripe. The bird’s belly is pale green, and it features a short tail and strong, long beak. Juveniles are streaked and spotty, gradually developing adult plumage. Known for its loud “yaffling” call, the Green Woodpecker is a most often seen in British gardens and woodlands, where it feeds primarily on ants.
