About the Fish
The Green Chromis Fish (Chromis viridis) is a small, iridescent fish with shimmering scales that reflects light beautifully in aquariums and reefs. Adults typically reach a size of around 5 cm. They are native to the Indo-Pacific region, inhabiting coral reefs and lagoons, preferring shallow waters and often seen schooling in large groups around branching corals, especially Acropora species, which provide both shelter and breeding grounds.
Green Chromis are peaceful, social fish that naturally form shoals or loose aggregations, both in the wild and in captivity. They are diurnal, spending the day actively swimming in the open water above coral heads and seeking shelter among the branches at night. Their diet is omnivorous, consisting mainly of zooplankton, phytoplankton, small crustaceans like copepods and amphipods, and various types of algae.
The species is protogynous hermaphroditic, meaning individuals are born female and can later change sex to become males as they mature. During spawning, males establish and defend small territories on the substrate, preparing nests for egg deposition. Multiple females may lay their eggs in a single male’s nest. The male then guards the nest, fanning the eggs to keep them oxygenated and eating any that do not develop properly to prevent disease.
