The Greater Spotted Woodpecker is a striking British bird, known for its black and white plumage with a bright red patch under the tail. Males have an additional red patch on the back of the head, while females have a black nape. They are medium-sized, measuring 22-24 cm in length, with a wingspan of 34-39 cm. Their flight is distinctive, with a bounding motion. Both sexes drum on trees to communicate and mark territory. They inhabit woodlands and gardens, feeding on insects and seeds, and are common throughout much of Britain.
