About the Frog

Glass frogs comprise more than 100 species of Centrolenidae and are primarily found in rainforests of Central and South America. They are light to bright green, often with speckles that match the colouration of their eggs. Most unusual is their translucent underside and legs, through which their internal organs, including a tiny beating heart, are visible through their skin.

Their transparency camouflages them by allowing light to pass through, with more light passing through the legs than the more opaque back. At rest, with their legs tucked in, their outline is softened making them almost disappear on rainforest leaves. They also have the remarkable ability to temporarily concentrate their red blood cells inside their livers without clotting, increasing transparency, when under threat. Additionally, translucency allows these frogs to absorb sunlight more efficiently, helping them warm up.

Male glass frogs are responsible for guarding and caring for the eggs laid on the undersides of leaves that hang over streams or rivers, where the developing tadpoles will eventually drop into the water below once they hatch. They are highly attentive parents, guarding the eggs against potential predators and watering them regularly to prevent drying out.
