About the Fish
The Discus Fish (Symphysodon) is an iconic aquarium species known for vibrant colors, circular body shape, elongated fins, and graceful swimming patterns. They are native to the Amazon River basin, being commonly found in tributaries, floodplains, and blackwater rivers with slow water movement, dense vegetation and submerged roots. These waters are warm, with low light penetration. Tannins released from decaying organic matter create slightly acidic, soft water conditions that discus fish thrive in.
They are schooling fish that thrive in groups, with a minimum of five individuals recommended for a harmonious tank environment. Within the group, a pecking order is established through complex behavioural interaction, with dominant individuals often asserting control over feeding spots and territory. While these interactions rarely escalate to serious aggression, maintaining a proper group size helps distribute social pressures and reduce stress on subordinate fish. Discus fish are relatively peaceful, making them ideal for community tanks with similarly calm tank mates.
Discus fish are also known for unusual parental care. When breeding, a pair will move away from the group and both parents participate in brood care. They secrete a nutritious mucus layer on their skin, which their newly hatched larvae feed on during their first four weeks. During the first two weeks, the parents stay near their young, allowing them to feed easily, later swimming further away, resulting in the young being gradually weaned and starting to fend for themselves.
