About the Frog
Dendrobates azureus, or South American blue poison dart frog, thrives in humid, lowland tropical forests, often near streams or small bodies of water. The forest floor, covered with leaf litter and dense undergrowth, provides hiding places and potential prey. Constant moisture is crucial for their skin, which must remain hydrated to facilitate respiration and batrachotoxin secretion.
They exhibit strong site fidelity, often occupying a small, defined territory. During the day they forage for small invertebrates, such as ants, mites, and beetles, which are abundant in their habitat. The most important source of toxins for Dendrobates azureus are myrmicine ants, which the frogs ingest, sequestering the steroidal alkaloids gained in their skin secretions for defensive purposes. The bright blue colouration serves as an aposematic signal to predators.
Captive bred frogs do not develop toxicity because the frogs depend on prey sources of toxic alkaloids within their specific natural habitat. The primary threat to Dendrobates azureus is habitat destruction due to deforestation and human encroachment. The loss of rainforest areas not only reduces available habitat but also impacts the availability of the specific prey species the frogs rely on for their toxic defence.
