
The chaffinch is a pretty British bird known for its gorgeous appearance. Males display a blue-grey crown, chestnut brown back, and pink breast and cheeks, with distinctive white wing bars. Females have a more subdued brownish-grey plumage with similar wing markings. Both sexes are about 14.5 cm long with a wingspan of 24.5-28.5 cm. Chaffinches are common in gardens and woodlands, feeding on seeds and insects. Their bright song and varied calls are characteristic features of these birds. They are one of the UK’s most common breeding birds.
