The capercaillie, Scotland’s largest grouse, is a striking bird. Males are predominantly dark grey with a green sheen on the breast, brown wings, and a red mark above the eye. They have a distinctive “beard” and long tail. Females are smaller, with mottled brown plumage and darker barring. Both sexes are turkey-sized, with males weighing up to 4.3 kg and females up to 2 kg. The capercaillie is known for its dramatic courtship displays, where males perform a lek, making unique sounds and displaying their plumage to attract females. They inhabit Scotland’s pinewoods.
