The Amethyst Deceiver (Laccaria amethystina) is a small purple mushroom commonly found in leaf litter of both deciduous and coniferous woodlands, especially under beech and oak trees. Its cap is convex when young and flattens with age, fading from deep purple to a pale tan or brown. The gills and stem, also purple, lose their colour as the mushroom matures, which can make older specimens harder to identify. Often growing in groups from late summer to early winter, it is edible but capable of accumulating arsenic from polluted soils.
