The Violet Webcap (Cortinarius violaceus) is a striking mushroom distinguished by its deep purple colouration, which extends across its cap, stem, and gills when young. The cap starts convex and flattens with age, growing up to 15 cm in diameter, often covered with fine scales or velvety fibrils. This species forms mycorrhizal relationships with trees, mainly in woodland habitats across Europe and North America. A cobweb-like partial veil (cortina) covers young gills, later leaving fibrous remnants on the stem and a rusty-brown spore print. While visually impressive, it should not be eaten due to possible toxicity.
