The red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) is a plump, ground-dwelling gamebird native to western Europe, and Introduced to Britain in the 1700s for sport. It is now established in parts of England and Wales. It is identified by its bright red bill and legs, white throat bordered by a black collar, and grey-brown body with bold black flank stripes. Preferring open, dry farmland, scrubby hillsides, and vineyards, it usually runs rather than flies when disturbed and lives in coveys outside the breeding season.
