About the Fish
The Variatus Platy (Xiphophorus variatus) is a vibrant and hardy freshwater fish species belonging to the Poeciliidae family. Originally native to Mexico and parts of Central America, they have become popular worldwide through the aquarium trade. A range of striking colours have been bred, including this vibrant orange. They grow to a maximum length of 7cm.
They are peaceful community fish popular in tropical aquariums. They are active and social, and it is beneficial for their well-being to be kept in groups with their own species. They also co-exist well with other community fish, but aggressive fish may stress them. They are tolerant of brackish water, making them easy to care for. Being omnivores, they will eat a variety of foods.
Platies are livebearers, giving birth to live young as opposed to laying eggs, after a pregnancy of approximately a month. In the right conditions, female platies can give birth to 20 to 50 fry per month. Adults display no parental care toward their young and will happily eat them if given the chance.
