The greenfinch is an olive green bird with a stout pale bill for cracking seeds. It is common across much of the UK and Europe, where it often visits feeders, hedges, parks, and woodland edges. The male’s yellow-green tones are especially noticeable in spring, while females are browner and more subdued, which helps them blend into nesting cover.

Their diet is mainly seeds, though they also eat buds, berries, and insects. During the breeding season, insects become more important because they help feed the growing chicks. Breeding usually takes place in small colonies or loose groups in trees, shrubs, and hedges. The female builds a cup-shaped nest, lays four to six eggs, and the chicks fledge in 16 to 18 days.

They are social birds and gather in flocks that move and feed together, especially outside of breeding season. This behaviour gives them a better chance of finding food and spotting predators, although it also causes squabbling over the best food. Their flight is undulating, and they are known for their distinctive trilling song and display flights in spring.

This is a superwash treated sock weight (fingering, 4ply) yarn spun from 75% merino wool and 25% nylon for enhanced durability. It is suitable for approximately 2-3mm needles.
