The Crimson Waxcap (Hygrocybe punicea) is a bright mushroom found mainly in unimproved grasslands, meadows, and old churchyards from late summer to early winter. Its cap, initially deep blood-red and sometimes covered in a whitish bloom when young, can grow up to 15 cm across, flattening and paling with age to reveal yellowish or straw-coloured patches while often retaining a red edge. The gills are yellow when young, turning redder with maturity, and the stout, dry stem is white at the base, shading to yellow and red near the cap. This rare but locally abundant species prefers land untouched by fertilisers.
