The red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) is a plump gamebird introduced to Britain from France in the 1700s. It measures about 35 cm in length with a wingspan of 50 cm. It has bright red legs and a red bill, with a sandy-brown back, pale grey breast, and pinkish-buff belly. Its most distinctive features include a large white throat patch bordered by a solid black necklace and bold rufous and black bars on the flanks. The crown is warm pinkish-brown with pale grey edges, and the eye is surrounded by a bright red ring. This bird thrives in open farmland and dry, sandy soils across Britain
